It's Raining!!

Yes, okay, I know rain is usually bad. But my craft room is right at the front of the house. And that means in the weather we've been having recently I haven't been able to spend any length of time in there. Which in turn means there are cardmaking bits dotted around the various cooler bits of my house! Mainly on the kitchen table getting in the way!
But this weekend I got the chance to spend a whole day crafting!! And it's been wonderful.

The first thing I needed to make was a thinking of you card for a friend. I wanted to keep it nice and simple, and knowing he likes Vintage I went for a muted colour scheme.

I started off with the lovely Gorjus card blanks, and a set of clear stamps with a nice flower on them.

I went for Gorjus because they're such nice quality cards, and there's a lovely old fashioned, almost wallpapery design in them.

So, this next bit is a fun reverse glitter technique using vellum. I've stamped my flower onto vellum using the Black Soot Distress Ink. Next, I've used a small piece of the A4 double Sided Adhesive sheets form Stix2 and stuck it to the back of my design.

Then I've cut out my flower using the XCut precision scissors.

And glittered the reverse with the Cosmic Shimmer Polished Silk Glitter. One of the nice things about this glitter is it's so fine, and it sticks so well that you can put foam pads onto it and they won't fall off! They'll hold nicely.

And viola! The finished card:

I think it's the little details that make all the difference to a project. On the front of the flower I've added a few dots with a gluepen and a teeny bit of glitter. The vellum has been edged in Tim Holtz Distress embossing powder. Really easy to do, just run a clear ink around the edge, sprinkle on the powder, then heat. I've added a couple of pearls to the corners and finished off with the silver straight line borders.

Now for the insert! I wanted to put in a nice vellum insert to match the vellum on the front. But as we all know, vellum is a nightmare to glue!
Luckily we have a solution!! The vellum glue that actually works! It's Beacons 3 in 1 Craft Glue. I know a lot of people have already had it waved at them when they come in the shop! Because it is just such fantastic sticky stuff. It dries in a matter of seconds, but yet it leaves you enough time to wobble things around if you've popped them on wonky. And most importantly it truly is invisible on vellum.

So, add a thin line along the fold of your insert:

Then put it into place inside the card. And look at that! Properly invisible vellum glue!

Brilliant!

So what have all of you been making in the rain?

Steampunking the Laptop!

I've been wanting to do this for ages! So, I've finally built up the courage to steampunk my laptop...and I've taken a few photos to show you all what I did.

I was inspired by some ready-steampunked laptops which you can buy. But I really fancied giving it a go myself. Good excuse to play with some of the gorgeous Vintage goodies from Chronology!

So, to start with, my little laptop:

(well, technically, netbook,. But never mind!)

I've cleaned off all the surfaces with computer wipes and left it to dry off.

Next up, the best bit, the shopping!!

I went a bit nuts with Chronology... and grabbed a load of gorgeous goodies for this project! The plan is to still have plenty left at the end to tuck away into my stash and use on men's cards or on vintage scrapbooks in the future.

So, packets open, and fiddling around with some layout ideas:

Like that second one! But then I decided I wanted a distressed background too. So out came the Tim Holtz!

And here is what I came up with. It's a coloured background made with various shades of brown (tea dye, vintage photo etc) and flicked with water and black re inker. The edges have been distressed with my trusty thread cutter tool! Which is totally not for distressing edges, but does a much, much better job than a file. It's easy to tear the paper with a file, this little gadget gives a nice even roughed up edge:

When it was ready to go, I used Beacons glue to stick the whole thing together and onto the laptop itself:

Now for the scary bit!!
I've used a cotton wool ball and some Artiste metallic gold acrylic paint and "dabbed" a distressed border directly onto the laptop itself:

It came out really well and I'm very pleased with the effect:

Ta da! Now, for the inside. I dug out some nice steampunky/vintagey peel offs and used a few more of the metal embellishments from the Chronology range. (Excuse the messy desk! Creative chaos again...)

Really pleased with the finished result! One Steampunked Laptop:
