Faith's Guide to Tim Holtz Distress Inks - Part 3

There are so many different techniques for stamping with distress inks! Here are a few of my favourites;

Basic Stamping

The obvious stamping technique with distress inks is to just ink them up and stamp! What's nice about this is that a distress ink smudged on to form a background, and a stamped ink will be two different colours.

That's Aged Mahogany, both in the background and stamped. The stamp is from those Urban Stamps I love.

Watercolour Stamping

This is a fun one, you can create gorgeous watercolour effects using these inks! It's very simple, ink up your stamp, I've used Dusty Concord, and then squirt it with your water-squirter. You want it looking something like this;

I've stamped on that other key there without water for a comparison. Once your squirted stamp is on, it'll look something like the one on the left here;

Isn't that gorgeous! So distressed! And you can make some lovely things like this using that technique;

Beautiful!

Lazy Watercolouring With Distress Inks

I love this technique, so simple, yet so effective. To begin with, ink up your stamp with your chosen distress ink and stamp it onto your card.

Next, grab yourself a wet paintbrush and use it to drag the colours in to watercolour certain parts of your image.

Isn't that lovely? Here's what I did with a favourite wooden stamp of mine, my gorgeous little Forever Friends bear.

Stamping and Embossing with Distress Inks

Something else which is special about distress inks is that they stay wet longer than a normal inkpad. So even though they're not a pigment ink, you can still use them for stamping and embossing!

For basic stamping and embossing, ink up your chosen stamp with distress ink and stamp it onto your card. Using a clear embossing powder, cover the design and tap the excess off. Heat up your design with a heat tool, and the distress ink will show through!

(That's Vintage Photo)

And here is that technique on a card;

There's Umbrella Man again. He's had the wording urban stamp stamped all over him in black Distress Ink, then embossed with clear powder. The speckles were done by dabbing a bit of black ink onto the mat, then picking it up and flicking it with a wet paintbrush.

Distressed Embossing

The other really cool thing you can do is distressed embossing! Start off like normal, ink up your stamp, stamp it on and sprinkle on your powder. Here I'm using a gold Papermania embossing powder and the Aged Mahogany Distress Ink.

Now, tap off your excess powder, but really give it a good tap!

You want it to look something like this, with a lot of the powder flicked off and only a little still holding to the ink.

 Next, heat it up! And you get a beautiful, half-embossed distressed effect.

Love that finish! I had a bit of a play with it afterwards too, and came up with this;

(It's just some Vintage Photo and a bit of water.)

Anita's Clear Gloss & Distress Inks

Now this is just a fabulous effect! And so simple to achieve. You can already get two colours from one pad of distress ink using the basic stamping technique, this is how you get a third!
Adding the gloss to your stamped image is just like colouring with a pen. The gloss has a really fine nib, and is very easy to control.

I've just covered the main part of the image, leaving the keyhole itself free. Once it's dry, this is the effect you get;

Isn't that gorgeous! I love how it changes the colour of the background and darkens up the ink.

And this is what else you can do with gloss;

(Recognise that one? The gloss is used on the heart.)

And just to show that Distress Inks don't have to be Vintage, they can be Girly!

Faith's Guide to Tim Holtz Distress Inks - Part 2

The Water-Squirter Method

Begin by smudging on two colours of ink, just like for the Basic Backgrounds. Remember to always use a circular motion, and always start off on the mat and work your way onto the card. With this technique, try to really overlap the colours of ink. I've started here with the Dusty Concord Purple, and when I've put on the Victorian Velvet, I've overlapped it quite a way onto the Dusty Concord.

Next, you need a water-squirter. Any kind will do, one for doing your hair, one for misting the plants, or in my case, the Cat's naughty spray! Give your card a light squirt of water all over. The two colours of ink will blend again, and once it's dry, you're left with this fabulous result!

The Aged Background

This is a brilliant one! Gives a fabulous Vintage effect. First off, it's my two favourite colours, Antique Linen and Vintage Photo. So, starting off with the Antique Linen, you need to give your card a good cover of colour.

Next, screw your card up, no really, screw it right up!

Don't worry if it tears a little, this is Vintage! Rips and tears are good. Once you've unscrewed it, you want it to look something a little like this;

Next, you want to add the Vintage photo. Blend it on your mat as usual, and very lightly smudge it over your crumpled card.

Ta-da! Beautiful Vintage background! I just love that effect. When I'm using something like this, I tend to stick it down with the Stick-It glue stick, purely because having an all over covering of glue, you can get your piece to flatten back down again nicely.

Here are some ATCs made using these two techniques. Artist's Trading Cards are a great way to play with new goodies and try out new things. They're just a tiny little project, the size of a playing card, so they're really quick to make. The idea is to keep them for inspiration, and swap them with other crafters, a bit like those football trading cards for children...but more fun!

That one on the right with Big Ben uses the water-squirter technique. And up the top there is the Aged Background technique. I've just changed the colours a little since the Urban Stamps I've used on this one are from the Jubilee-themed range, Portobello Road. The blue is called Blue Jeans and the red you see is Aged Mahogany.

Stamping with Distress Inks

There is so much you can do with distress inks when it comes to stamping! But for now, this is just a simple little add on to the Vintage Background. I've used an Urban Stamp from my favourite set and inked it up with Aged Mahogany. You don't need to use Cut N Dry, this is one of the few times you use the distress pad itself, just treat it like a normal inkpad.

Ink it up, and stamp it on! And this is the fabulous result you get made into an ATC;

I glued the crumpled card onto another piece of card cut to the same size, and this flattened it out nicely. The Love detail was made using the water-sprayer technique with the wording stamped over the top once it was dry. The heart was made using a different technique, more on that one next time when I'll be showing some of the other brilliant things you can do if you're stamping with distress inks!

Faith's Guide to Tim Holtz Distress Inks - Part 1

My new favourite thing! Distress Inks really are wonderful, they're just so different, and so versatile. If you want to achieve vintage effects, they're perfect. But you can also achieve all sorts of other effects too, right from pretty pink girly cards all the way through to monochrome men's cards.

Let me introduce you to some of the things I've learnt to do with Distress Inks. And let me tell you now, I have so much more to still learn too. For one little inkpad, there really are a myriad of possibilities!

What you need to get started

Really, all you need to get started with these inks are a few things. First off, you'll need a surface to work on to. What you'll see in these photos is my XCut Glass Cutting Mat, which is ideal. But let me let you in on a little secret, all you really need is a smooth surface, so a sheet of Acetate will work perfectly! If you don't have Acetate already, we sell 12x12" sheets for £1.

Next, you need a sheet of Cut N Dry. This stuff is essentially a type of fine sponge with a foam back, the sort of thing normal inkpads are made of. You can't use your distress ink direct from the pad. Distress Inks are made differently to normal inkpads, they're a woven fabric rather than a foam. This is great, because it means they hold more ink, and therefore last longer! But it's not very easy to control for direct-to-paper techniques, which is why you need the Cut N Dry. It also protects your inkpad, and since these inkpads are refillable (refills cost £3.99) one inkpad can last indefinitely. The sheets of Cut N Dry come in A4 size for £4.99, and since you only need to cut it in to 1" squares to use, and it's washable, one sheet will likely last you a lifetime!

And last but not least, you'll need your Distress Inks! (By the way, when the new masks come in, there are new colours of  Distress Ink coming in too!)
The only other thing you're likely to need is water. Nothing special, just the kind that comes out of the tap! Don't worry, I will explain...

Basic Distress Ink Backgrounds

Begin by dabbing your little square of cut-n-dry into your ink and smudging a little onto your worksurface.Always working in a circular motion, smudge the ink from the worksurface onto your card. (This is the secret!)

 (That's Dusty Concord by the way, stunning colour!)

Next, repeat using your next colour. I've used Victorian Velvet. Distress Inks stay wet for longer than a normal ink, so keep working at your paper and you can get your two colours to blend into each other.

Now that in itself is a stunning background, but you can go one step further...

The Water & Paintbrush method

Once you've smudged on your ink using one or more colours, you can add water! Distress inks react very differently to water compared to normal inks such as pigments. For example, if you were to put a bit of water on say, a brown pigment ink, the colour would split giving you red and a sort of mucky green! Distress Ink holds it's colour, but it also blends with itself. So that pink and purple will blend in together, and neither will turn into a mucky green! They'll stay pink and purple. All you need to do is take a paintbrush and simply flick water onto your work.

Initially, you won't see any difference, but as the water dries you'll end up with this;

Cool, huh?

And you can make cards like this using that technique;

(That's Umbrella man, he's a Tim Holtz Bigz Die)

(That's another Tim Holtz Bigz Die, it's called Regal Crest)
